Street Smart Takes On A Major Canadian Intersection

Jun 26, 2026

When a city trusts you with one of its busiest intersections, you show up ready and you show up right.

That’s exactly what happened in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where Street Smart, in partnership with ATS Traffic, recently completed the deployment of a full temporary signalization system at the 8th Street and Cumberland Avenue intersection, one of the city’s high-traffic corridors.

THE PROJECT

The City of Saskatoon needed a robust, reliable temporary traffic signal solution capable of managing a complex multi-lane intersection, one with dedicated turn lanes, raised island medians, and traffic moving in all four directions simultaneously. Street Smart delivered a fully engineered Proposed Temporary Signalization layout using the PTS-1000A portable traffic signal system, including left turn head configurations on the approaches that required them.

The design accounted for:
• Eastbound and westbound 8th Street approaches with separate thru, left-turn, and right-turn lanes (~3.3m each)
• A raised island median on the turn lanes
• Lane closures managed cleanly with curb and temporary channelizing devices • Full MUTCDC-compliant signal housing with 12V LED heads
At the heart of the system was Street Smart’s STS Triple Redundant Wireless Controller communicating via 900 MHz radio, 2.4 GHz WiFi, and 3G/4G LTE cell simultaneously, with dual radar and video detection ensuring the intersection never missed a beat.

THE EXECUTION

Field and sales manager Shawn Hollenback led the on-site setup, coordinating the installation across all intersection approaches with the precision and professionalism that a city-level project demands.
The results spoke for themselves.
After the post-deployment review meeting with the City of Saskatoon, ATS Traffic’s Josh Azevedo passed along this message:
“So I just had my meeting with the city. They’re very happy with the setup and how smoothly it went. Can’t wait for the next intersection. See you back up here in one month, Shawn.”
That’s not just a project win; that’s a personal request. That kind of recognition doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of the care, technical skills, and professionalism that our team brings to every deployment.

WHAT MADE THIS WORK

Temporary signalization at a major urban intersection isn’t just about placing equipment. It’s about engineering confidence. The City of Saskatoon needed to trust that traffic would flow safely, signals would stay synchronized, and the system would hold up in real-world conditions.
A few things made this deployment a standout:
Triple-redundant communication. With 900 MHz radio, WiFi, and cellular LTE all running simultaneously, the STS controller stays connected even if one or two communication paths go down. For a city intersection, that reliability isn’t optional; it’s the baseline.
Dual detection. Radar and video detection working together means the system responds to actual vehicle presence, not just fixed timing. That’s safer and more efficient for drivers navigating a construction zone.
MUTCDC compliance. Canadian projects require adherence to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada. Our systems are built to spec — no workarounds, no shortcuts.
Clean site management. The photorealistic renderings in the project plan weren’t just for show. They translated directly into a well-organized, clearly marked installation that the city’s team could immediately understand and approve.

LOOKING AHEAD

Shawn will be heading back to Saskatoon within the month for the next intersection. This project is a testament to what happens when technical capability meets genuine craftsmanship in the field.
Street Smart is proud to support ATS Traffic and the City of Saskatoon in keeping construction zones safe and traffic moving. Up north, we are just getting started.
